CV Axle Clicking When Turning? Signs of a Bad CV Joint

Hearing a clicking or popping noise when turning—especially during acceleration? A worn CV axle or CV joint may be the cause.

CV axles transfer power from the transmission or differential to the wheels while allowing the suspension and steering to move. Over time, the CV boot can crack or tear, allowing grease to escape and dirt or moisture to enter the joint.

Common bad CV axle symptoms include:
• Clicking when turning
• Popping during acceleration
• Vibration while driving
• Grease around the inside of the wheel
• Torn or leaking CV axle boot
• Clunking when accelerating or decelerating

Catching a damaged CV boot early can sometimes prevent further joint wear. Once a CV joint develops significant play or starts clicking, CV axle replacement is often the practical repair.

Not every clicking noise means the axle is bad. Wheel bearings, suspension components, steering parts, and drivetrain issues can create similar noises, so inspection and diagnosis are important before replacing parts.
