After installing lowering springs or coilovers, some drivers notice their car hitting bumps harder, scraping more often, or feeling unusually harsh.
The first assumption is usually that the car is simply too low. But ride height isn't always the problem.
Available suspension travel matters just as much as how low the car sits.
When a vehicle is lowered, the suspension has less compression travel before reaching the bump stops. If the spring rate, shock damping, or bump stop setup isn't appropriate, the car can feel harsh even on relatively small bumps.
A few things we check when setting up lowered suspension:
• Shock travel and bump stop clearance
• Coilover spring preload and ride height adjustment
• Tire-to-fender and suspension clearance
• Control arm angles and bushing preload
• Camber and toe after the final ride height is set
At Midnite Auto in Sacramento, we install and fine-tune lowering springs, adjustable coilovers, and performance suspension systems. We focus on getting the stance right without sacrificing unnecessary suspension travel or drivability.
Getting a car lower is easy. Getting it to sit low and drive properly takes a little more work.
