Off-Road Suspension: Ground Clearance vs. Suspension Travel

When building an off-road truck or SUV, more lift doesn't automatically mean more capability.

Two important things to understand are ground clearance and suspension travel.

Ground clearance determines how much room you have under the vehicle to clear rocks, ruts, and obstacles. Larger tires can increase clearance under components like the differential, while a suspension lift kit mainly creates additional space and changes suspension geometry.

Suspension travel is how far the wheels can move up and down while maintaining control and tire contact.

A good off-road suspension setup balances:
• Ground clearance
• Suspension travel and articulation
• Shock performance
• Approach and departure angles
• Tire size and traction
• Proper suspension geometry

A taller truck isn't automatically a better off-road truck.

For trail driving, rock crawling, overlanding, or high-speed off-road use, the suspension should be built around what you actually want the vehicle to do.
