What Does a Differential Locker Do Off-Road?

If you're getting into off-roading, you've probably heard people talk about locking differentials or “lockers.” But what do they actually do?

An open differential allows the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds, which is great for normal street driving. The problem comes when one tire loses traction.

In certain situations, the wheel with less traction can spin while the wheel with grip isn't able to use the available torque effectively.

A differential locker changes that by locking both axle shafts together, forcing both wheels to rotate at the same speed.

That can make a huge difference when:
• Rock crawling
• Climbing steep or uneven trails
• Crossing deep ruts
• Driving through mud
• One wheel lifts off the ground

This is why a properly equipped 4x4 with lockers can sometimes go places that a taller truck with bigger tires can't.

A lift kit gives you clearance.
Off-road tires provide traction.
A locker helps you actually use that traction.

Off-road capability isn't about one modification—it's about building the entire 4x4 system to work together.
